Ural Federal University (Ekaterinburg, Russia) is pleased to present two new Summer School programs in Russian Studies which are aimed at receiving new knowledge in the academic field, mastering Russian language and getting acquianted the Russian lifestyle and unique culture.
The Summer program “The Demidov Express” (from July, 6 until July, 26, 2015) is the first Summer School held in two Russia’s leading universities: Ural Federal University (Ekaterinburg, Russia) and the Higher School of Economics (Saint-Petersburg, Russia). “The Demidov Express” is aimed at exploring current economic, political and cultural issues which are relevant for the BRICS countries and improving the level of Russian language (different levels from A1 to C1).
The course will be an interrelated process of lectures on Russian Language and workshops on the most important aspects of BRICS-countries in the world of today:
- BRICS countries in global politics,
- Institutional and legal regulatory foundations of BRICS,
- Business-culture and economic regulation within BRICS,
- Financial policy in BRICS countries,
- Challenges of social and cultural transformation in BRICS countries.
- The first 10 days within the program “The Demidov Express” participants will spend in Ekaterinburg
interacting with the UrFU experts, professors and volunteers, sharing knowledge and cultural experience and visiting the highlighted sights of Ekaterinburg and the Ural region. Than we invite our guests to join us in a real adventure: to cross Russia from Ekaterinburg to Saint-Petersburg by the famous train “The Demidov express” (35 hours). The next part of the Program – 10 days in the treasure of Russian culture – Saint-Petersburg – presumes cooperating with the internationally renowned, top-ranked research center the Higher School of Economics and joining reach cultural program with the huge variety of extracurricular activities.
As an essential part of the School, Russian language will be practiced everywhere: in the class, in the city, in different workshops, during excursions and even during the train-journey (“Train-training”). The language study is oriented towards improving communication skills in real-life situations as well as in academic environment. Edutainment activities such as quests and games as well as elements of Russian Academic language and discourse study are core elements of the language study part.
The application deadline is May, 1st , 2015. Upon completion UrFU’s and HSE’s certificates are given.

The three-week language school “The Russian Studies in Real Russia: Talents for Talents” (Ural Federal University, Ekaterinburg, Russia) is keeping in the period from July, 26 till August, 14. “Talents for Talents” makes the emphasis on the individual basic human, academic and business needs of the learners, the opportunities to make a quick language progress and get an unforgettable cultural experience.
1. The Intensive Course of Russian as a Foreign Language
The Summer-2015 program is tailored to the needs of undergraduates and graduate students interested in Russian language. There are no limits or restrictions: our courses are aimed at studying different aspects of the language to the full at different levels (from A1 to C1).
Our goal is to advance the communicational skills of every student – even if he/she only starts to learn Russian. For this reason the new program includes: more hours on Russian as a foreign language (60 hours per three weeks); the Outdoor practical seminars; opportunities to have extra classes with leading UrFU tutors; individual learning materials.
A lot of attention is paid to the use of grammar, vocabulary and peculiarities of pronunciation with the focus on the practical language. Fluency-based activities, pair and group work, interviews, role-plays (e.g. historical quests, “Stop-day” game, “Survival in the city” quest, “Teach me how” game, etc.) encourage learners to develop their confidence and practice language functions.
2. Workshops and Practical Seminars
During the first days of the summer program students are free to choose a specialized Workshop within following fields of Russian Studies:
1) Business and Economics of Russia;
2) Russian Culture and Literature;
3) History and Sociology of Russia;
4) Russian Media and Politics – and have practical seminars with the leading professors of UrFU; get an access to a quality theoretical discourse and modern actual learning materials; solve several real-time problematic situations; achieve a deep understanding of social and cultural context of Russia.
3. Cultural program and extracurricular activities
The whole course will be held in the local social and cultural context. It gives a chance to discuss some topics on the spot, practicing Russian language in informal environment and visiting the most significant places of Ekaterinburg and the Ural region. The tourist attractions (the border between Europe and Asia, the place where the last Russian Emperor Nicolas II and his family were killed, old merchant mansions of Ekaterinburg, skyscraper “Vysotsky”, and jewelry factory “Juveliry Urala”) and fascinating non-touristic places (an ancient Russian village of the XVII century with singing babushkas, the first golden mines in the Urals, the Museum of History of Agriculture and Peasantry and mysterious Nevyansk with its famous leaning tower).
The evenings of Russian national cuisine, open-minded volunteers, extra-activities (visiting Russian banya, celebrating the Day of Ekaterinburg, cinema, shopping, etc) – as informal part of the both programs – make the atmosphere of staying in Russia friendly and amusing.
